THE Education Ministry will set up a Bahasa Malaysia council, which will be responsible for popularising and recognising the Bahasa Malaysia Standard Framework (KSBM) locally and abroad, the Dewan Negara heard today.

Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the council was among the measures to be implemented within five years, to empower Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).

“DBP, the Teachers’ Training Institute Bahasa Malaysia campus, public universities and ministry departments are developing KSBM as a framework of reference to measure language competencies among native and non-native speakers.”

He was replying to a question by Senator Dr Mohd Nor Monutty, who asked about plans to revamp DBP so that it would be on a par with international institutions.

Maszlee said other measures to be taken included reviewing the DBP Act.

He said adjustments would be made to DBP departments’ roles, with an emphasis on internationalising the agency’s functions by opening up offices or branches in strategic locations overseas to spread Bahasa Malaysia and the Malay culture. – Bernama, September 3, 2018.

  • YB, some of the international schools locally are offering Mandarin and French as elective. Perhaps promoting quick wins locally will be faster.
