THE federal government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH) is the biggest traitor now, Selangor Perikatan Nasional chief Azmin Ali said.

The former PKR deputy president said the label “traitor” suited PH, which he said had been deceitful and failed to deliver their promises to the people after eight months.

“Today, the people see PH and DAP as traitors,” said Azmin, who is running for the Hulu Kelang state seat, at the polling centre.

“They promised the people many things to gai power. They were desperate to be in Putrajaya, but after eight months they have not fulfilled a single promise they made to the people. That makes them traitor number one,” the Bersatu supreme council member added.

Azmin was taking a dig at PH, which was forced to enter into coalition with long-time nemesis Barisan Nasional to form the federal government last year following a hung parliament post-general election.

In 2020, Azmin was labelled “traitor” after he led a group of PKR members to leave the party. Known as the  “Sheraton Move”, it led to the ousting of the PH federal government.

Azmin, who is a former Selangor menteri besar, is tasked to lead the PN quest to capture Selangor. He said the coalition will deliver policies that care for the people if it is given the mandate to govern the country’s richest state. 

“In every one of our ceramah, we present programmes that can bring benefits to the people as a whole. And the offer we make is not for one particular group or race but for all the people of Selangor,” Azmin said. 

On his chances of winning today, Azmin said he is confident of securing a huge victory in Hulu Kelang. 

“I’m confident of forming a new state government in Selangor tonight. 

“The people of Selangor want reform. There is a wave of discontent not only in Selangor but throughout the country. 

“With the support that we have seen in the past week, I’m confident that we will secure a huge majority win in Hulu Kelang and many other state seats in Selangor,” the former international trade and industry minister said. 

Azmin is head-to-head in Hulu Kelang with friend-turned-foe, Wanita PKR deputy chief Juwairiya Zulkifli, who is political secretary to Selangor caretaker menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Azmin was the assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa and Juwairiya, for Bukit Melawati. 

Hulu Kelang was the first election Azmin won, in 1999. 

The seat is under the Gombak constituency, for which Azmin was the MP for three terms starting 2008.

Azmin lost the Gombak seat last year to Amirudin by some 12,000 votes. – August 12, 2023.
