We have wasted 15 months bickering on race and religion, says Patriot

POLITICIANS must stop harping on race and religion and start working on economic reforms, including eradicating poverty completely, said a veterans’ group today.

National Patriot Association (Patriot) president Brig Gen (r) Mohamed Arshad Raji said the focus, especially on the part of the government, should be on economic issues.

“Opposition parties should play their rightful role to check on the Pakatan Harapan government’s performance, and stop harping on race and religion issues from now on.

“We must all think as Malaysians and what is good for our country. Never forget that our destiny is shared,” he said in a statement.

He said the past 15 months have been wasted bickering on race and religion issues instigated by opposition parties, as well as infighting within the PH coalition.

Arshad said this hampered efforts that could have been better used to put into works for the promised reforms.

“We are now into the second year of PH governance. Unity among the various ethnic groups is no better. Inter-ethnic distrust remains high, and so is inter-religion (distrust).

“The level of trust from among Sabahans and Sarawakians towards the federal government has not improved.”

He said if the people are in disarray, disunited, un-driven by a common cause, it then reflects on the poor leadership of politicians.

“The cabinet has to take responsibility,” he said.

Arshad also slammed Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali for his quick dismissal of a United Nations report on the status of extreme poverty in Malaysia.

He was referring to UN rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Philip Alston’s recent finding which disputed that Malaysia’s official 0.4% poverty rate, or the threshold of RM980 monthly household income.

Alston had suggested the actual figure was around 15%.

“Patriot is disappointed with Azmin’s quick dismissal of Alston’s suggested figure, saying that it was a baseless claim.

“Azmin should rightfully ask his officers to reassess the statistics and the basis of the poverty line calculation.”

He said this denial syndrome of government officials when caught in a blunder has to stop.

“Common sense will tell that a family of four will find it impossible to survive with a meager income of RM980 a month in the Klang Valley,” he said. – August 25, 2019.

  • Most of the ministers in Dr Ms cabinet have been side tracked by political, racial and religious issues.. They forgot their roles, which they have been put in respective portfolios. Some ministers seem to have lots of time on their hands to indulge in political and racial issues..
The Patriots President is absolutely spot-on on his assessment.
Dr Ms advisors are not doing their jobs. They seem to have been sidetracked by their own assessments, thus giving the PM wrong advise.
Looks like the PH government has lost its intent and drive and lost its focus..
During this time also people are changing their perceptions about BN/UMNO and are slowly moving to accepting the former administration. The rationale: people are getting fed up by the performance of the ministers, the constant U-turns in decisions.. Perhaps, PH is not ready yet. They got their chance but did not seize the opportunity to show the people that they could deliver. I believe GE15 will show a different outcome.. if PH cant get its act together.

  • There is lack of, if none at all, leadership in the PH govt. And the buck stops at .....

    You know who.

Instead of charting policies and blueprints for a new Malaysia, PH under Mahathir appears to be content at retaining the old ways of governing. So much so most people are beginning to wonder, did BN/UMNO ever leave the govt? Whats so new, about Malaysia post May 18?

All of these makes many of us question - just why the heck did Mahathir join forces wt PH, to dislodge BN? One cannot deny his drive; but you wonder if it was all about the ends justifying the means.

I for one, am beginning to lose confidence; if Malaysia Baru wants to truly be baru, then perhaps its time for old school politicians to take leave.
