MCA said today it is determined to safeguard the opposition’s multiracial platform despite backlash stemming from its decision to remain in Barisan Nasional (BN).

In acknowledging that this decision might not sit well with certain quarters who perceive it as being “politically incorrect” and detrimental to its popularity, MCA said it stayed on to “prevent race relations to tilt towards Malays against non-Malays”.

On Umno, BN’s lynchpin party, and PAS’ partnership, MCA said that “when a BN component party pursues (a) partnership outside the coalition, it must not forget to adhere to BN’s code of consensus and diversity”.

It said that it faced a crucial decision: leave BN behind and allow the Umno-PAS partnership to lead the opposition or stay in BN and strengthens multiracial cooperation.

“MCA believes that the choice to remain in the coalition was crucial in creating a more democratic, benign, diverse and moderate political environment.

“It is going to be a tough road ahead, we are aware of that, but we are ready to face it with character and fortitude.”

On December 2 last year, MCA had agreed to move for the dissolution of BN instead of leaving the pact.

However, at a supreme council meeting on March 8, a consensus was not reached on the dissolution. – March 17, 2019.

  • You guard them like guarding a spoilt and mentally unsound brother who at any time may burn down the house, but unfortunately no one is going to support you. It is indeed a sad and tough road.
