Jessica Chew Cheng Lian appointed as Bank Negara deputy governor

THE finance minister has approved the appointment of Jessica Chew Cheng Lian as Bank Negara Malaysia deputy governor for a three-year term, effective January 1 next year, following the retirement of Dr Sukudhew (Sukhdave) Singh on December 31.

In a statement today, BNM said Sukudhew would enjoy benefits accorded under the bank’s terms and conditions.

It said as deputy governor, Chew would be responsible for the financial sector’s regulation and development, including payment systems, organisational development and centralised shared services.

“She is currently assistant governor responsible for the development of regulations and policies in the banking and insurance sectors, focusing on efficiency, innovation, market institutions and structures, development finance and talent development.”

The central bank said Chew would also be responsible for the development and regulation of payment systems, as well as oversee the money services business.

It said Chew was a member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Stability Committee.

Chew joined the bank in 1993 and has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Finance, from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

In line with her appointment, said BNM, deputy governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour would oversee the monetary and economics sector, supervision sector, investment and operations sector, as well as LINK and BNM offices, and the finance and legal departments. – Bernama, November 28, 2017.
