PERLIS Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has defended Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, who was arrested for allegedly insulting Hinduism, saying that he is being bullied by the Pakatan Harapan-led government.
Asri in a Facebook post said there were various statements made by individuals who are in the government who insulted Muslims and caused racial tension but were only called to give their statements.
“But they arrested a person who simply recounted his personal experience of converting to Islam in a mosque.
“Were his facts wrong or was he insulting, or just telling a story of himself?” the Perlis mufti said.
Police yesterday arrested Zamri for allegedly insulting Hindu gods. He was detained by the Kangar police serious crimes unit (D9) and has been remanded till Wednesday.
Zamri is being investigated under the Section 298A of the Penal Code as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for disrupting harmony and transmitting offensive communications.
Police in a statement today said more than 800 police reporters were lodged against Zamri, who also heads the heads the Muslim propagation organisation called One Centre Malaysia.
Zamri was recorded allegedly insulting Hinduism during a religious lecture. A Kelantanese organisation called Info Sunnah released the video on social media.
He is also a close associate of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.
Asri also questioned the speech of political leaders from other religions that often caused enmity with the Muslim community.
“I do not blame the police, but this happens because of the political reality that allowed Muslims to be bullied.
“The voices of defending Islam are hard to hear among those who lead the administration today except for a small number. Is this justice?
“This reality makes the people agree that Islam is in a less secure state under the administration today.”
Asri also said that Zamri has carried out many programmes to help build good relationships with other religions.
“There were church and temple visits, and he has also attended various dialogues organised by the One Centre Malaysia,” Asri added.
It was reported that Zamri was previously investigated for three crimes, with two of them being serious offences.
He was detained for voluntarily causing hurt, rape and criminal breach of trust. β April 29, 2019.

Kenyan co-workers that he decided to convert to Islam. When his mother found out she was very upset. He rang me for advice. I told him that according to the Prophet, 'Heaven is under your mother's feet, tolerate her and let your deeds convince her that you have become a better person'. In Zamri's case there is no forgiving for talking bad about his original faith Hinduism. He grew up in and the rest of his original family is still in it. One's mother's milk is priceless. One can talk about the good things in Islam without criticising other religions and hurting people. Asri sir, there is no reason for you to get upset.
