DR Mahathir Mohamad said today he does not need any support from PAS but more than 50% support from Pakatan Harapan lawmakers to remain as prime minister.
PH already has the numbers in the Dewan Rakyat, the PH chairman said.
“I need the support of at least more than 50% of elected representatives. I do not need the support from PAS because PH has more than half of the seats in the Dewan Rakyat,” he told a press conference after launching a new plant by Metrod Holdings in Klang.
PAS leaders have in the past week said they will support Dr Mahathir should a plot to oust him take place via a vote of no-confidence.
Yesterday, Dr Mahathir said he does not understand PAS’ constantly changing attitude.
He said several PAS leaders met him and stated their support for him to remain as prime minister, but the party later acted in ways that can be deemed unsupportive.
“PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, (PAS secretary-general) Takiyuddin Hassan and Terengganu Menteri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar came to see me and expressed their support for me to continue as prime minister.
“In fact, they gave their admission in writing, signed by Takiyuddin, at least. Their aspiration was for me to continue as prime minister.”
Dr Mahathir said there is no need for the Islamist party to express its support bur should instead show it through actions.
“No need to tell me, or sign a letter as if supporting me.
“It didn’t say anything about supporting PH. I am not the government. The government is PH.”
On the RM90 million that PAS allegedly received from Umno, Dr Mahathir said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, which yesterday said the funds did not go into PAS’ accounts, may not have received full information on the matter.
He said MACC does not have the time to investigate many cases involving former prime minister Najib Razak.
“MACC may not have gotten the full information. It takes time.
“There are a lot of cases involving Najib that MACC has no time to investigate, but that does not mean he did not steal.”
MACC said it did not find any trace of the RM90 million, said to be 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds, in the party’s official accounts.
Takiyuddin said the anti-graft agency’s confirmation proves that claims PAS had taken the money were simply meant to derail its 14th general election campaign. – February 25, 2019.
