Call to close down all tahfiz schools too radical, says Islamic group

Tahfiz schools are not what they used to be, says Islamic Dakwah Foundation of Malaysia (Yadim) president Dr Yusri Mohamad. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 8, 2018.

THE call by former information minister Zainuddin Maidin to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa to close down tahfiz (religious) schools is too radical.

Islamic Dakwah Foundation of Malaysia (Yadim) president Dr Yusri Mohamad said he did not agree with the call as Zainuddin’s description of tahfiz schools as being jumud (rigid) was not congruous with the development of these schools in the country.

“The call is too radical. Tahfiz schools now are not what they were before and they have produced students who excel in all professions.

“We cannot make such statements (jumud) and label all tahfiz students just because of a small number who are like that,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration and open house by Islamic civil society groups, which was also attended by Kelantan Yadim director Mahadi Awang in Kota Baru today, Yusri said tahfiz schools had long been established in the country and any shortcomings could be addressed without resorting to closing them down.

In his blog yesterday, Zainuddin urged Mujahid to close down tahfiz schools to steer Muslims away from rigid religious practices. – Bernama, July 8, 2018.

  • I dont usually agree with Zam , but this suggestion of his , is a good one and timely. Tahfiz schools are breeding grounds of extreme conservatism and racism.

  • Now its the Real Test of PH. Whether they really take the bulls by its horns or run away cowardly at the first sign of trouble. Syed Saddiq already cowed in by not daring to tell off those who criticize hiring a gay and now Mujahid is not even reviewing Jakim and its expenditures. Are we set up for disappointment?
