NEW Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari’s appointment was not endorsed by Pakatan Harapan parties, Dr Idris Ahmad, an earlier frontrunner for the post, said today.
The Ijok assemblyman from PKR said he had been the only candidate with the support of all Pakatan component parties.
“Amirudin only had the support of Azmin (Ali),” Idris was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini at a press conference today.
Amirudin succeeded Azmin who was earlier sworn in as menteri besar but relinquished the post to take up a federal cabinet position as economic affairs minister. Azmin is Selangor Pakatan chief and PKR deputy president.
It is known that Amirudin and Azmin are close associates with a relationship going back to the founding of PKR in 1998.
Idris today showed the press photocopies letters endorsing him as the menteri besar candidates, signed by the heads of Pakatan’s four parties – PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari, Selangor Amanah chief Izham Hashim and Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua.
He said Amirudin’s name and Seri Setia assemblyman Shaharuddin Badaruddin’s were only submitted after the Selangor palace asked for three candidates.
The Malaysian Insight earlier reported that the palace had asked for three names in separate requests to Pakatan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
This was after Wan Azizah had submitted Idris’ name as the initial choice for menteri besar.
Idris today also said that Azmin’s swearing in as Selangor menteri besar on May 11, two days after the general election, was without the consent of all Pakatan parties.
He said there had already been speculation that Pakatan had wanted him (Idris) to be the new menteri besar even before the 14th general election.
“I don’t want to be a gentleman anymore, he just went there on his own,” he was quoted as saying, referring to Azmin going to the palace for the ceremony.
Idris also told the press today that he had lodged a police report to clear his name from allegations that he misappropriated money from an education fund.
He questioned the timing of the allegations that came amid the selection for a new Selangor menteri besar. – June 19, 2018.
