AMIRUDIN Shari was picked from three names Pakatan Harapan leaders Anwar Ibrahim and Mohamad Sabu submitted to the sultan for the menteri besar’s post.

In separate meetings with Anwar and Mohamad, the sultan had asked each of them to propose three names, a source in the coalition told The Malaysian Insight.

Initially, PH had approved two names – Amirudin and Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad – proposed by the president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also PKR president.

Anwar was asked to submit  three names during a meeting with the sultan on May 31 that was also attended by former menteri besar Azmin Ali.

“The three names given included Amirudin and Idris Ahmad, both of whom had been proposed by Dr Wan Azizah with the support of the heads of PH components in Selangor,” said the source.

The sultan had also conveyed a request for three names when he met with Amanah president Mohamad, who is Defence Minister.

“Bersatu and DAP did not submit any names because the sultan had asked PKR and Amanah for names,” said the source.

The source said Dr Wan Azizah had proposed Idris without consulting Azmin, who was still menteri besar at the time.

Amirudin, who is Sungai Tua assemblyman and who was state exco for youth development, sports, cultural and entrepreneurship development in the previous term, is to be sworn in as menteri besar  this morning.

Azmin who led the state government for four years in the previous term, had been sworn in as menteri besar after PH retained Selangor and won federal power in the May 9 election.

But he was appointed Economic Affairs Minister by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad shortly aferwards, leading to a search for a successor. – June 19, 2018.

  • The manner in which the Menteri besar is decided upon is not right. Pakatan Harapan should first decide among themselves whom the new Menteri Besar should be. Thereupon, the candidate’s name should be presented to the Sultan, who should then, by convention, appoint him.
Though the Sultan has the discretion over the appointment of the Menteri besar under the state constitution, however, that is only a qualified discretion. This is because the person so appointed must be someone who is, in the Sultan’s opinion, “likely to command the confidence of the majority of members of the state assembly” as stipulated in the state Constitution. And Since Harapan has the majority in the state assembly, it’s chosen candidate would automatically become the Sultan’s choice as well.

  • The way that the sultans behave are like little napoleans too. It's not for the sultan to demand three names and the MB choice being his alone. Go into politics and stand for office if you want this right. As a Constitutional Monarchy, please stay away from choosing sides and let the majority of the elected assemblymen choose among themselves the rightful leader. You're just crapping yourself by ignoring Bersatu because of name calling sensitivity. You ignore DAP because they are not Muslim, but they are subjects in the state and country. Start being a leader, abet a figurehead for the state and do away with all these pettiness and power trip.

  • The controversy over the MB's appointment clearly shows that neither Kak Wan nor Anwar is in complete control of PKR. The other leaders in PH component parties don't have this problem but in PKR power struggle has become a perennial problem since the day Anwar went to prison. This can only be sorted out if Anwar takes over the party leadership from his wife and tightens up discipline in the party.
