MALAYSIA’S collaboration with electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla will support the country’s ambition to become a regional green technology hub, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said.
In a discussion with the Tesla Malaysia delegation yesterday, the minister said the US carmaker has reiterated its commitment to the local ecosystem by involving nine Malaysian companies in developing EV charging infrastructure. Tesla will also collaborate with local higher education institutions for knowledge transfer and human capital development.
“May this joint effort continue to grow, bringing great benefits to our country’s economy, technology, and sustainable energy,” he said on social media.
Tengku Zafrul said the talks focused on the progress and implementation of the global battery EV AP scheme.
By the end of last month, Tesla had installed 52 superchargers with a capacity of 250KW, 54 wall connector AC chargers, and more than 4,500 home chargers on the peninsula.
With an investment of US$13.5 (RM59) million, Tesla has shown a strong commitment to developing EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia.
“We also discussed the significant potential of battery energy storage technology, which is expected to increase energy efficiency and stability of Malaysia’s electricity grid,” the minister added.
Tesla’s investment in Malaysia came under scrutiny following recent reports that the company had shelved plans to build factories in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia to focus on setting up charging stations.
Reacting to the news, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the pullback was due to business losses and competition from China.
“Zafrul has received the latest information. This is because Tesla is facing losses and cannot compete with EVs from China. This is the direct statement that we received,” Anwar said.
He said Tesla’s plans in Malaysia were still in the early stages.
Tengku Zafrul clarified that the ministry had never officially announced that Tesla would open a factory in Malaysia. He added that Tesla had also never announced plans to build a factory in the country.
