Selangor Umno has done nothing to restore glory, says Zafrul

SELANGOR Umno has failed to do anything to revive itself following its humbling defeats in the last general election and state elections, said former state treasurer Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

He said that his calls for the state chapter to restore the glory of the party in Selangor has fallen on deaf ears.

He noted that in the 2022 general election, Umno recorded its worst performance in history in the state by not winning a single federal seat.

And then at the state elections last August, Umno just won two state seats in a seat it used to be in power.

“After Selangor Umno lost badly in the state election, I said this was the last warning for us, but the state leadership did not learn anything.

“It has been eight months since the state elections, but there’s still nothing. In-depth post-mortem? None. A new strategy to win the hearts of the people? None,” said the investment, trade and industry minister in his Facebook post.

“So, if my view on the urgent need to restore Selangor Umno’s glory is not accepted, I think it’s better that I focus on assisting the party at the central and divisional level.”

Last week, Zafrul announced that he was stepping down as the state Umno treasurer, saying that the state chapter’s efforts to revive the party were “dull” and that they did not match those of the party’s central leadership.

He remains the Kota Raja Umno division chief and Supreme Council member.

State Umno information chief Mohd Zaidi Md Zain hit back and said Zafrul should have discussed his problems or written an official letter to Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin before talking about his grievances in public.

In his latest Facebook post, Zafrul also said Selangor Umno must carry out a study to understand the people’s wishes and needs.

He also said the party must upgrade its operations at the organizational level so that it becomes a cost effective organization, communicating quickly and open to grassroots ideas.

“There must also be a win-win cooperation framework with our friends in Selangor state.

“We need to adopt new political cultures – intellectual culture, focus on solutions and policy.

“Because if we don’t change the culture, no matter how good our visionary plans are, we will eventually remain powerless,” he said. – April 6, 2024.
