TENGKU Zafrul Abdul Aziz’s announcement on social media yesterday of his immediate resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer has caught the state chapter by surprise.

State Umno information chief Mohd Zaidi Md Zain was even more surprised by the reasons for his resignation.

“I’m shocked by Tengku Zafrul’s resignation announced via social media,” said Zaidi in a statement today.

“He should have at least discussed (his problems with us) or written an official letter to Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin before talking about his grievances (in public).

“Any internal problem concerning Selangor Umno can be resolved via discussions and negotiations.

In a shock announcement yesterday, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul said the Selangor Umno chapter’s efforts to revive the party were “dull” and that they did not match those of the party’s central leadership.

“I witnessed for myself how party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the national leadership never stopped charting the way for the revival of the party at the central level.

“But no matter how great the central planning is, in Selangor, the implementation is dull and there are times when it is not in line with the central theme,” he said on Facebook.

He remains the Kota Raja Umno division chief and Supreme Council member.

In response, today Zaidi said Tengku Zafrul’s claims were baseless and made without consulting the Selangor Umno leadership.

Zaidi noted that the state Umno chief Megat Zulkarnanin was also the political secretary to the Umno president.

“As such, all his (Megat Zulkarnain) acts and decisions would of course be in line with the party president’s stance,” Zaidi said.

He assured the people that “all is well in Selangor Umno” and that “there is no internal crisis”.

“Megat Zulkarnain commands the full support of all division and branch chiefs,” he added.

He siad Tengku Zafrul regularly missed meeting where he could have raised the issues that were bothering him.

“The least he could have done was to talk to Megat Zulkarnain as they often met at other functions.

“We must investigate this matter (of Zafrul’s resignation) as he could have been influenced or incited by a third party,” said Zaidi.

Zafrul was appointed Selangor Umno treasurer in April 2023. – April 2, 2024.
