MCMC acts on social media leaks in Zayn Rayyan case

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified and requested several social media platforms to remove purported leaked investigation information on the Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin’s case.

In a statement today, MCMC said it has submitted a request to the social media operators, including TikTok and Telegram to remove the content.

“Sharing or spreading the alleged investigation information about the case is an irresponsible act that could interfere with the trial.

“MCMC reminds the public not to share unverified or false information,” it said, adding that this may constitute an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Offenders can be fined up to RM50,000, imprisoned for up to one year, or both, with an additional fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

The commission advised social media users to delete posts or comments that could provoke speculation over the case.

It was reported earlier today that the federal Classified Crime Investigation Unit was investigating the alleged leak of information in Zayn Rayyan’s murder probe.

This, after police received two reports, one from the victim’s family and the other from the case’s investigating officer.

According to Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, investigations are being carried out under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act, Section 203A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The police report follows a leak of purported police investigation details by whistleblower site “Edisi Siasat” on Telegram, less than 24 hours after Zayn Rayyan’s parents pleaded not guilty to negligence charges that could have caused physical injury to their child.

The Telegram group had uploaded what it claims were statements taken by investigators from both parents.

Zayn’s parents pleaded not guilty to child neglect at the Petaling Jaya sessions court on Thursday after initially being probed for murder.

Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, both 29, pleaded not guilty before judge Dr Syahliza Warnoh.

Zayn Rayyan, an autistic six-year-old  was reported missing on Dec 5 last year. His body was found a day later, about 200m from the apartment where the family lived.

His parents were arrested on May 31, and remanded for a week. – June 15, 2024.
