IN YET another twist to the Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin murder investigation, police today arrested his grandparents.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the couple was arrested to assist investigations into the boy’s murder.

“Yes. Both were arrested about 2.30pm and are being held in Subang Bestari.

“We will apply for their remand at the Petaling Jaya court tomorrow,” he said when contacted.

Earlier today, Mahmud Jumaat, who is the lawyer representing the parents of the murdered autistic boy, said his mother did not enter a plea but only gave a statement to the court.

He said the closed court session was to obtain his client’s statement under Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act 1950.

“Any admission made in police custody cannot be used in court unless it’s made in the presence of a sessions court judge or magistrate,” he told a media conference today.

The grandparents were also at the Petaling Jaya court complex.

Last December 6, the body of six-year-old Zayn was found lying in a stream close to his home at Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai in Petaling Jaya. He was reported missing the day before.

The child is believed to have been murdered after a post-mortem found self-defence wounds on his body.

His parents were detained by police two weeks ago to assist in investigations.

The magistrates’ court last Friday extended the remand order against Zayn’s parents for six more days until June 12.

The boy’s parents were initially remanded for seven days to assist in the murder investigation. – June 12, 2024
