THE lawyer representing the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin has withdrawn from the case effective today.
In a statement, Mahmud Abdul Jumaat said he made the decision to focus on several other ongoing cases.
As a result, the Tetuan Emir Mahmud & Co lawyer decided to withdraw as counsel to Zayn Rayyan’s parents, who are currently under remand.
The seven-day remand ends on June 9.
“I pray that the case proceeds smoothly according to the existing legal process. As a legal practitioner, I urge everyone to respect the legal process and refrain from making wild speculations about this case for the benefit of all parties involved,” he said.
Mahmud was appointed by the family of Zayn Rayyan’s parents after the couple was arrested by police last Friday.
Six-year-old autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin was found dead in Damansara Damai last December.
The case, which was previously classified as sudden death, was refiled as murder after police found evidence of foul play.
Zayn’s body was found more than 30 hours after he was reported missing on December 5.
A forensic examination found injuries to Zayn’s neck and body. Police believed he was murdered elsewhere before the body was dumped in the creek.
In January, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain said police had recorded the statements of more than 200 people in connection with the case. – June 4, 2024.
