A SENIOR police officer allegedly involved in a fatal accident with a 17-year-old student in Meru, Ipoh, last Friday will be charged with murder under section 302 of the Penal Code at the Ipoh magistrate’s court tomorrow, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) said in a statement.

The chambers said that it had found enough testimony to charge officer – with the rank deputy superintendent – under the section after evaluating the investigation.

“Therefore, the suspect will be tentatively charged under section 302 at the Ipoh magistrate’s court tomorrow, following which it will set a date to transfer the case to the Ipoh High Court for trial,” the statement said.

The fatal accident involving the student, who was hit and dragged by a car along Jalan Taman Jati near SMK Jati in Meru had gone viral on December 15.

A 44-year-old senior police officer was believed to have driven the car involved in the accident that resulted in the death of Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, who suffered severe injuries to his chest and abdomen.

The police officer had been remanded for three days until tomorrow to facilitate investigations. – Bernama, December 17, 2023.

  • Condolences to the family. Can't imagine a senior police officer doing this. How well the case is prosecuted in court and the court's verdict is what the public will be waiting to see.
Charging is one matter. Some who are charged get off Scot-free or with a slap on the wrist.
For murder charge, intention is an important factor. How is the AG going to prove "intention" to kill? Or, like in the Altantuya case, intention does not have to be inquired into?
