Govt to block websites, portals causing 'chaos' before GE14

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak says the government will block any website or portal that 'causes chaos' in the run-up to the 14th general election. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, March 23, 2018.

COMMUNICATIONS and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said the government will block any website or portals that ‘cause chaos’ before the 14th general election (GE14).

Salleh said his ministry is cooperating with the police to identify such portals and action will be taken under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“Of course, we will take action against whoever who breaks the law. If they are found to be causing a ruckus, we will take the appropriate actions.

“We have not received any reports so far but we are always monitoring and we will wait for the proper documentation from authorities to block websites or portals if needed,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Online.

Meanwhile, the police have also identified 1,100 individuals as election ‘troublemakers’ who may cause trouble during GE14.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the individuals may cause situations that jeopardise public safety such as by spreading fake news.

Putrajaya has recently intensified its crackdown on ‘fake news’, including by drafting a bill expected to be tabled in Parliament next week to curb fake news and launching the portal sebenarnya.my.

Salleh’s deputy, Jailani Johari, had also said any news on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal not recognised by the government is considered fake news. – March 23, 2018.

  • Please define 'cause chaos'. Telling the truth about 1MDB? Calling a thief a thief? Exposing blatantly fraudulent gerrymandering?

  • The only portals left standing will be UTUSAN, B HARIAN, NST, STAR and METRO.

Among them the most reliable is UTUSAN aka Kertas Jamban

  • thank god i read both the STAR and the malaysian insight ....even if all anti governmental website or portals are blocked before the 14th general election , i can still count on the star for election updates. And i wonder if i am counted amongst the 1100 individuals who are thought of as election troublemakers. Are keyboard warriors considered election troublemakers ? Naah...i am probably thinking too much or too highly of
myself ... but just to be sure, perhaps i should make more fun of Dr. Mahathir's age again .... Surely somebody who makes fun of Dr. Mahathir's age won't be considered an election troublemaker by the government ....
