ANY news related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) that is not recognised by the authorities is considered false information.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari said the case of the state investment fund was under investigation by the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers, while investigative reports were tabled to the National Accounts Committee (PAC) made up of  government and opposition representatives.

“The proceedings have been done transparently. The Hansard can be read on the Parliament website. The PAC report has also been published and is readable on the same site, PAC’s proposals have been fully accepted and fully implemented by the government. The rationalisation process has also been well implemented.

“In view of this, the government is of the stand that other than information which is confirmed by the authorities as mentioned, any information other than that will be acknowledged as false information,” he said when winding up the debate on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s speech for his ministry at the Dewan Rakyat sitting, today.

He said the issue should not be turned into polemics, especially by the opposition which was always raising the topic.

Jailani said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had imposed sanctions on 40 portal and blog sites for false news content.

In addition, he said 154 cases of cyber crime and social media abuse were under investigation, and 16 cases were being prosecuted.

He said MCMC also took action against 4,358 fake accounts, 80% of which had been deleted by the social media platforms

In another development, Jailani said Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) was ready to host programmes that would let MPs on both sides of the camp debate one another, if there was need and if it was deemed suitable.

In fact, he said, political parties would be given the opportunity to present their manifestos in compliance with broadcast guidelines

“There is no issue of us never giving space to the other side… not just RTM alone, but Astro has also held interviews with the opposition,” he said. – Bernama, March 21, 2018.

  • If news not recognized by the government is fake news, then 1MDB will do no wrong simply because the government would not admit what have taken place. So the anti-fake laws is meant to stop Malaysians discussing 1MDB, and all the corrupt practices of the government. The law will authorize government corruption because nobody will live outside the jail if they ever say anything about government action. That law proves that the government plans to be corrupt with impunity. But when BN loses in GE 14, the law will have no protection against people who controlled 1MDB.

  • Would official statements by DOJ of USA on 1MDB fake news? If so then there is territorial limitation on the truth of news. It would then turn out that all news taken as genuine in Malaysia are fake news outside the country. By extension all official documents issued by the government including passports might be considered fake outside the country. The deputy minister has shown the real intention of Najib government to stop Malaysians talk about the most successful project of Najib in 1MDB.
