A good PM must be a good CEO

LIKE it or not, a general election is just around the corner.

The prime minister (PM) is the head of government. He presides over the cabinet and directs the executive branch of the federal government. The Agong appoints the PM who, in his opinion, is most likely to command the confidence of the majority in Parliament.

Can we then say that a PM is like a chief executive officer? A CEO leads the company operations. He sets the tone and the culture of the organisation and must ensure the longevity and success of the business.

A PM or CEO must show conviction and sincerity. He must walk the talk. Only then will people believe you can deliver a better future.

Both sell hope.

To deliver, both must retain or attract best talents and to involve stakeholders, including critics, in major decisions.

Interpersonal skills in and out of parliament are key.

The Oath of Office and Allegiance calls for faithful discharge of duties to the best of one’s ability.

More than six decades have passed. We have experienced nine PMs and we can easily see and compare the performances of each one. Each has his own strengths and weaknesses.

If we take a popular poll today, who will stand out?

In the UK, Winston Churchill is considered one of the greatest PMs because of his leadership during World War 2.

We know that politics is murky compared to businesses. Politicians have their own agenda. Most times, promises are made but results are lost. Budding ones come in with conviction, enthusiasm and passion but before long these fizzle out.

Most dangerous are the ones who exploit issues of religion and ethnicity.

Now, we don’t have a strong CEO. The PM’s party does not hold a majority in the Dewan Rakyat and he is not the president of his party. By convention, a PM should command the confidence of a majority of MPs and be the leader of the party with the most seats.

Further, we have an enormous cabinet on uncertain calibre.

It is unlikely that any party will emerge the clear winner to form a strong government after the GE.

It is hoped that the Agong will appoint a PM who commands the confidence of not only of a majority of MPs but also a majority of the people and who has with traits of a good CEO.
