Retired cop claims trial to shooting cat, discharging gun in public


A RETIRED policeman has been charged with committing mischief in the magistrates’ court in Selayang today, after he allegedly discharged a firearm in public and shot a cat.

Zainol Abidin Md Zain, 64, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out to him before magistrate Nik Fadli Nik Azlan.

On the first count, he was charged with intentionally killing a male cat by shooting it using a shotgun belonging to him in Kampung Setia, Kuang, at 6.40pm on July 1 last year.

The charge under section 428 of the penal code carries a maximum three years’ jail or fine, or both, upon conviction.

Zainol Abidin was also charged with discharging a firearm in a public place without any reason permitted by law, using the same weapon at the same place and time.

The charge under sections 39 and 43 of the Firearms Act 1960 carries a maximum one-year jail or maximum RM2,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nur Iman Wan Ahmad Afzal appeared for the prosecution, while the accused is represented by a National Legal Aid Foundation laywer, M. Mariappan.

The court set bail at RM2,500 for each charge with one surety and fixed February 24 for mention. – Bernama, December 16, 2021.
