Anwar’s statements from prison, if unauthorised, could add jail time, says Nur Jazlan

ANWAR Ibrahim’s jail time could be extended if the de facto opposition leader’s recent statements had been issued from behind bars without the approval of the director-general of Prisons Department, said Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

“Lately, several statements have been issued by  Anwar. I  wonder whether he really made the statements,” he said at the anniversary celebration of Anak Minangkabau Johor Welfare Association at Kompleks Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat in Johor Baru today.

Nur Jazlan said the statements included Anwar’s “blessing” for  Pakatan Harapan (PH) to name former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the opposition prime minister.

“If Anwar’s statements were relayed through third parties and were not approved by the Prisons Department, then it is an offence that can affect the jail period.”

He said action could be taken against the third parties who had relayed Anwar’s statements, such as by barring further visits to Anwar.

Dr Mahathir is reported to have agreed to make way for Anwar to become prime minister as soon as a royal pardon was obtained for the jailed PKR leader, which would allow him to return to Parliament once more. – Bernama, January 12, 2018.

  • The sham trials and incarceration of Anwar Ibrahim have already incurred universal wrath across the democratic world, and any uncivilised attempt to gag him completely and viciously punish him further as hinted by Deputy Minister Nur Jazlan would not only exacerbate this BN government’s wretched international reputation, but will trigger severe electoral backlash from the Malaysian people.
Or is it another dirty trick in Umno/BN’s sleeve to delay its day of reckoning from its already scheduled window of March/April to July/August, considering Anwar’s scheduled release date of June 8? Does this not smell of Umno panicking in the face of unprecedented vulnerability to losing the election?

  • Listen carefully from essentially a more open minded UMNO minister. The malicious willfulness is SYSTEMATIC ENTITLEMENT in UMNO/BN. UMNO will never change. For every leadership I not like ISA Samad, there are many more like ISA Samad and Najib - corrupt and abusive is their way. The best of them do it under pressure, the many more do it everyday, all the time.

  • So prisoners do not have a right to speak. If they do, then statements do not need to be authorized. If not, they are not even allowed to promote government propaganda.
