GET ready, as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he will contest in the 14th general election.

I may contest in any one of three constituencies. They are telling me that I have a good chance of winning in Langkawi, Kubang Pasu and Putrajaya.

“So, be ready for that, because I will be,” he said during a press conference at the end of Bersatu’s inaugural annual general meeting in Shah Alam today.

When asked if this meant he would be contesting again, the Bersatu chairman said: “Looks like I will contest.”

The wily Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan chairman quickly dismissed a question on whether he would agree to the three conditions set by PKR for him to be PH’s candidate for prime minister.

“All prime ministers are temporary. They are given five years only. Sometimes less. If they are sick, they resign, and if they die… that’s hard.”

When told that PAS said it was unconstitutional for PH to name a candidate for prime minister ahead of the general election, he said: “Who cares about PAS?”

Earlier this month, it was reported that Dr Mahathir and PH president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail were proposed as candidates for prime minister and deputy prime minister, respectively.

The proposal was supported by Bersatu, DAP and Amanah, while PKR has asked for more time to consider it.

The proposal hit a roadblock when PKR insiders said the party wanted Dr Mahathir to agree to its three conditions first. – December 30, 2017.
