PKR wants more time to discuss Pakatan Harapan’s proposal to name Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as prime minister and deputy prime minister ahead of the next general election, said communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the main priority should be how to reform the country, and not who should replace the current prime minister.
“
Fahmi said that previously, there were talks on an interim prime minister, and now, there was a suggestion to consider Dr Mahathir.
PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim also requested that PH leaders “negotiate with all parties”, including community organisations, so that the opposition coalition did not seem rushed into making its decision.
Fahmi’s statement is in response to a report, which quoted sources, on the development of the party’s internal discussions about PH’s prime minister candidate.
The Malaysian Insight yesterday reported that PKR had set three conditions to be met for it to agree to Dr Mahathir being interim prime minister if PH won the 14th general election.
The first is for the immediate release of Anwar and for Dr Mahathir to step aside for the former to be prime minister within six to 12 months.
The second is for PKR to be allocated the most number of parliamentary seats – at least 60 – and the third is for Dr Mahathir to agree to reform key institutions in the country.
“I acknowledged the media report, which cited sources, on the (PKR) leaders’ views on suggestions for the PH prime minister,” said Fahmi, neither denying nor agreeing with the report.
In an exclusive interview with The Malaysian Insight yesterday, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said PH had no other option but to name its candidate for prime minister before GE14 because voters wanted to know who would lead the country if the opposition bloc won.
He said the prime minister candidate should be decided and announced ahead of the election, no matter how difficult it was.
He said he understood that PKR needed space for discussions to reach a consensus, but “it should not be delayed”.
Muhyiddin, who is also PH election chief, said he was confident the matter would be resolved.
He repeatedly denied that the suggestion to name Dr Mahathir as candidate was an agenda by Bersatu, instead stressing that this was something the people wanted.
“
PH has been facing obstacles in confirming its prime minister candidate since the proposal was first made during a two-day PH retreat in Putrajaya earlier this month.
The Malaysian Insight had reported that Dr Mahathir, who is also PH chairman, was proposed as interim prime minister, and PH president Dr Wan Azizah as deputy prime minister.
Minus PKR, the proposal was agreed to by PH’s other component parties, namely Bersatu, DAP and Amanah.
During the PKR political bureau meeting three days after the retreat, the party neither agreed nor disagreed with the proposal, instead saying it wanted the matter to be discussed further in the party at the internal level.
Yesterday, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar denied that the party was opposed to Dr Mahathir becoming interim prime minister, saying PKR was more focused on winning GE14. – December 29, 2017.
