THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has fined Astro for airing Al Jazeera’s 2015 Murder in Malaysia documentary, reports Malaysiakini.

The compound notice, sighted by Malaysiakini, was sent to Measat Broadcast Network Systems Bhd, the operator of Astro on July 7.

The documentary on the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu was aired on Astro’s Channel 153 on September 11, 2015.

Confirming this, MCMC told Malaysiakini that Astro is fined for airing “indecent” content.

The company is guilty of airing the episode with the intention to offend related parties.

Astro fined a total of RM4,000 or RM1,000 for each time the documentary was aired.

Measat has 30 days to appeal.

The latest action comes in the wake of police investigation into Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown, another documentary recently aired on Al Jazeera’s 101 East programme.

National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) said on Monday Al Jazeera did not have the required licence to film and air the documentary, which showed the alleged mistreatment of migrants in Malaysia during the movement-control order.

Six Al Jazeera employees have been hauled up for questioning. – July 22, 2020.

  • Najib was offended by the documentary. Is he calling the shots and running the government now?
