FOREIGN Minister Hishammuddin Hussein’s claim that there are no Chinese vessels in Malaysian waters is wrong, said former foreign minister Anifah Aman.
He said the claim made by Hishammuddin is far from the truth, and suggests he is playing politics.
“I am appalled by the minister’s statement. He is either in denial or ignorant of the fact.
“Worst, he is playing politics with Malaysia’s maritime and strategic interests,” Anifah said in a statement today.
Anifah, who is former Kimanis MP, said he is told by “reliable” informants that there is Chinese presence in Malaysian waters.
He also said Malaysia should have the right to hold China accountable for its ships instead of turning a blind eye.
“Malaysia has never recognised China’s claims on areas in the South China Sea and the government must uphold the position to ensure Malaysia’s maritime and strategic interests are not jeopardised.
“Failing to do so is a great disservice to the nation.”
Hishammuddin was reported to have said there were no more Chinese vessels in Malaysian waters.
This was after the audit report showed Chinese ships invaded Malaysian waters for 89 times between 2016 and 2019.
He also said there were amicable discussions between the Chinese government and Putrajaya to resolve the matter. – July 16, 2020.
