THE Indian voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu should send a message to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to let Najib Razak serve his house arrest, said former minister Zaid Ibrahim.

Saying that he was perplexed with the Indian community’s loyalty to Anwar and DAP, especially when they have not gotten anything from the government, Zaid said they can effectively demand the PM to carry out the order of the (former) King as the law would require him to do.

“The Indians remain marginalised and are amongst the poorest wage earners in the country,” he said in a post on X today.

Zaid said the Indian voters in the constituency should remember the benefits they got under Najib’s government.

He said that it was time for the Indian voters in KKB to remember Najib and “collectively ask the PM to let Najib serve his sentence by house arrest as the former Agong had wanted”.

The Indian community in Kuala Kubu can show Umno the meaning of being law-abiding and grateful, the former de facto law minister said.

“If the Indians in Kuala Kubu Baharu can do this, the future Malay-led government will remember their sacrifice. They will get their dues.

“So, the leaders of the many Indian parties and NGOs, can you, for the first time, stand united in a coffee shop in Kuala Kubu Baharu, declaring that Najib Razak be released from prison?

“That will be a historic day, and Kuala Kubu Baharu Indians will send shock waves reverberating across Selangor,” he said.

Najib was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210 million for corruption in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International, beginning his prison term on Aug 23, 2022 after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal.

In February, his sentence was reduced to six years and his fine cut to RM50 million by the Federal Territories Pardons Board.

Najib recently claimed in a legal application that there was an addendum in the royal pardon order for him to save out his sentence under house arrest.

The court is to decide on the application on June 5.

Kuala Kubu Baharu, which has a mixed electorate, with Malays comprising 46%, Chinese 30%, Indians 18% and others 5%, will go to polls on May 11.

The by-election will see a four-way fight among Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional, Parti Rakyat Malaysia and an independent candidate. – April 29, 2024.
