PRIORITY must be given to Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders for cabinet appointments and not to former Umno leaders, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

He said this as rumours swirl that a former Umno leader will be appointed education minister, replacing Maszlee Malik who quit on Thursday.

“This is a Pakatan Harapan government. The PH spirit and its manifesto should be given priority,” he told reporters after an event at a Tamil school in Serdang today.

He added cabinet appointments are the prerogative of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad while saying he is not in the running to be education minister.

“By convention it is up to him who he wants to appoint. It is up to him and the PH leadership if they want to discuss it.”

Since Maszlee’s resignation, Jeli MP Mustapa Mohamad has been bandied as a possible replacement.

Mustapa quit Umno soon after the May 2018 general election and joined Bersatu, prompting talk he is eligible to be tapped for cabinet post.

He was the former international trade and industry minister when Barisan Nasional was in power. – January 5, 2020.

  • Education ministry badly requires a drastic reform before progressive rakyat abandon these national type secondary schools. Singapore rating our STPM 'A' equivalent to their 'C'? But rating UEC results as equivalent to Singapore standard. Hope this is just rumour buy again it sent a very strong message on the questionable rating of our exams. I heard of stories of able to pass an Add Maths subject by merely getting 10 to 20 marks, can u imagine how low we put ourselves?

    • Yes, you are right! Malaysia must have a highly intellectual, strong, dynamic Education Minister, who must be brave & quick to take action and create a single school system in Malaysia just like Singapore. We Malaysian refer & compare everything to the achievements of Singapore, let us take this pill together for the future of our Nation and future generations, accept a one school system that is beneficial to all, that doesn't discriminate or polarise our children because of race, religion or wealth. Let us take a step forward !! If one reads the comments of Malaysiakini readers, It seems our nation is rotten from inside, the readers abuse one community in such a way that I am ashamed to read the comments, I can't read more comments and I always stop reading after a couple of those. I think Malaysiakini also is doing a part to polarize & put fire in our community. Yess I mean Malaysiakini.

  • What Anwar Ibrahim advocates is what the people wanted. They want a new breed of leaders. UMNO has not only cheated the people of Malaysia but given it such a bad name that being associated with its previous members is plain stupidity. The Malaysian people do not want UMNO members to take on leadership roles.
Najib was not the only crook. Under UMNO, every cabinet minister, every civil servant was dishonest. Everyone knew that Najib was stealing money from Malaysian coffers. UMNO members were receiving money from Najib to keep quiet.
Why is DR M bringing in these scoundrels. Now his son, the MB of Kedah is resigning his post and it has been suggested that this "crook" is going to be in the cabinet, as the next Minister of Education. The problem is not PH, it is Bersatu ( and DR M). DR M is the problem in Malaysia. There are hundreds of thousands of BRILLIANT Malays, who can easily take on cabinet roles. But this is not to be because of DR M "self interest". So difficult to give up power.
Daily, he sows the seeds of hatred against Non-Malays, infact he is really a religious bigot-now potraying himself to be "not a moderate mulsim". You can embrace any religion ( and islam is good) but when you are the PM you must be PM for teh Jew, Hindus, Christians,Buddhists and the Malaysians Mulisms.
Our problemin Malaysia is not that Non-Malays dont respect the constitution and the needs of teh Malay population. What is upsetting is from 2020, now its 2030 and it goes on and on. Poor Malays are not being addressed-DR M is feeding the powerful andrich Bumiputras for his own self gain. It is time he goes and I hope soon. NO UMNO MEMBERS IN CABINET POSITIONS. I strongly agree with Anwar.
Malaysians must stand together for a strong Malaysia. They can only do that without the likes of Zakir Naik, UMNO members and DrM.
