Don’t be lulled by by-election wins, urges Wanita Umno head

UMNO members must not get carried away after a series of by-election wins for the party and Barisan Nasional this year, said Umno Wanita head Noraini Ahmad today.

Party members must remember that before the last general election, Umno won big in the Sg Besar by-election but yet was easily defeated by Pakatan Harapan in GE14, she said.

“General elections and by-elections are different. Maybe our victories in by-elections are not due to our strength but more to the people’s grouses against the Pakatan government,” she said at the opening of Wanita Umno’s annual congress at PWTC.

In the Sg Besar by-election in June 2016, BN won by 9,191 votes but still lost the seat in GE14 by 714 votes.

This year, Umno and BN tasted victory in a series of by-elections, including a massive win in Tg Piai last month, prompting many in Umno to think they can win back the federal government in the next general election.

Today, Noraini outlined three missions for Umno to prepare for the next elections, including strengthening the party’s machinery and to work closely with PAS on muafakat nasional.

“I want to invite all Wanita Umno members to start on a new work culture so that we remain focused. We can no longer rely on assumptions and perceptions.

“We need a strategy to gain more accurate data on the support for the party.”

  • Umno root out all those corrupted leaders, then there is a good chance to recapture Putrajaya. For now, sorry to say, those supported PH will still vote for PH bcos Umno is a worse choice.
