SOME 13,096 traffic offenders who failed to settle the summonses issued to them under the newly enforced Automated Awareness Safety System(Awas) and Road Offenders Demerit Point System(Kejara) in 30 days will face stern action from the Road Transport Department, its director Nadzri Siron said.

He said once the 30-day period ends, a warning notice will be sent to the offenders which require them to attend court.

“If the person fails to attend court, we will blacklist the individual and bar them from renewing their driving licence and road tax,” said Nadzri as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.

Transport Ministry secretary general Saripuddin Kasim yesterday said that out of the 13,096 summonses issued from April 15 to 20, 11,556 were issued for speeding while 1,540 for breaking the red light.

Nadzri said the demerit points will be given to the offenders after the person pays the compound when they renew their licenses or pay their road tax.

He added that the driver will have his or her points deducted, and not the vehicle owner.

For now, only two types of offences will receive demerit points – speeding and going against traffic lights. The offenders who commit these type of offences will get four demerit points for each offence.

He told the public not to take the matter lightly as they will end up with their license being suspended by the authority.

“If they continue driving with suspended driving license they will be dragged to court and face a maximum RM10,000 fine or three years jail sentence,” he was reported in Utusan Malaysia.

To date, 14 Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras have been installed in the country and more are coming soon to record the drivers who commit road offences. – April 24, 2017.
