Zuraida slams ‘selective’ sacking in PKR

PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin accuses the party of straying from its reformist spirit after it acted against two former leaders in Sarawak. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Nazir Sufari, November 25, 2019.

PKR must be firm about taking action against party members who break the law and not be selective, said vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin.

She said the party’s decision to sack Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian’s former political secretary, Zakaria Abd Hamid, over suspicion of corruption and bribery shows the collapse of its reformist spirit.

The Ampang MP said if it’s true that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission did recommend parties act against members found guilty in court, then PKR must also act against the other party members who violated the law.

“This involves cases of assault, gangsterism and seeking bribes during a party election,” she said in a statement.

Yesterday, the party’s disciplinary board chairman Ahmad Kassim said the decision to sack Zakaria and another member was made based on the advice from MACC via a letter dated October 23.

They committed the offence during the party polls last year.

In August, Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador and aide to party president, Anwar Ibrahim, was arrested following an alleged assault in Ampang.

While Zuraida did not mention his name, it is likely she was referring to Farhash, saying action should also be taken against others who had broken the law.

Zakaria, who is also Bera division chief, was said to have offered contracts worth RM20,000 and allocations amounting to at least RM300,000 at a meeting with local leaders on September 1, around the time he was running for a seat in the PKR central leadership council.

Following the sacking, Zakaria said in a statement was denied a chance to defend himself.

Zuraida said the dismissal would only raise a question mark about selective justice within the party.

“This is given that only certain individuals are being targeted if it is in the interests of certain leaders,” she said.

“I hereby denounce the party’s selective actions and call for immediate leadership reform, if this party want to be saved.” – November 25, 2019.
