NAJIB Razak cleared the air on the use of two personal credit cards in 2014, saying it was to buy gifts and jewellery for an unnamed royal.
The former prime minister in a Facebook post said the entire RM3 million credit limit was used within one day on August 8, 2014.
“It should also be emphasised that this is not a SRC (International) credit card but my own credit card.
“These expenses are for gifts to the relatives of a senior King of a government and their entourage who have good relations with our country.(Not Saudi Arabia or Abu Dhabi),” he posted yesterday without naming the recipients.
The post came hours after the Kuala Lumpur High Court heard that close to RM4 million was charged to two of Najib’s credit cards in 2014 and early 2015.
The cards were used in Italy, Hawaii and Bangkok in 2014 and early 2015 and settled with payments from his AmBank current account.
The prosecution’s 47th witness, Yeoh Eng Leong, an AmBank senior vice-president in charge of credit card authorisation and fraud management, said at least a dozen transactions were paid with a Visa platinum card and a Mastercard platinum card.
Notably, Najib racked up 10 charges amounting to €750,000 (RM3.3 million) on August 8, 2014, at an Italian branch of Swiss jeweller, De Grisogono.
Najib said the family (royals) and their entourage joined his family on the Italian trip at that time.
“It is a custom to give gifts to other government leaders.
“Usually the government will bear the cost of the gifts but this time, I paid with my credit card.”
Najib said his lawyers will explain the purchases and gifts that were later acknowledged via a letter from the recipient on August 8, 2014.
“I also did not reveal the name of the recipient in this posting because it is not fair to use the person’s name in public.
“The original letter will be presented to the court as evidence.”
Since the SRC International trial is ongoing, Najib said he would not comment further.
“What I can say is that the headlines from the PH (Pakatan Harapan) government are not all credible because they are very selective.” – July 16, 2019.
