NAJIB Razak today blamed Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz for Barisan Nasional’s loss of support, especially among Chinese voters, in the last general election.
According to a Sinar Harian report, the former prime minister gave several examples in which Nazri acted against BN’s interests.
“We all remember that prior to this, Nazri objected to the cooperation with PAS and instead urged Umno to sideline MCA and MIC and work with DAP instead.
“In the election, MCA also told me that among the reasons the Chinese vote declined was due to Nazri’s overboard criticism of Robert Kuok that offended the Chinese community,” he was quoted as saying at a gathering with his supporters in Batu Kawan, Penang, today.
Najib said this in response to Nazri’s remarks earlier today of the former’s appointment as BN adviser. Nazri had said the move was regressive and questioned if Najib bore ambitions of returning as prime minister if BN wins the next general election.
The former Umno president also mocked his ex-cabinet colleague for being unable to stand up to Pakatan Harapan, saying this was why Nazri could never be BN adviser.
“Nazri or whoever can play the role as BN adviser but is he willing to consistently criticise Harapan?”
Padang Rengas MP Nazri and Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin had, since the announcement, been vocal in protesting against Umno’s decision to bring Najib back to the forefront.
Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced Najib’s appointment as chairman of BN’s advisory council. Zahid yesterday said it was not wrong to make use of Najib’s experience.
Earlier today, Nazri and Khairy once again questioned the need for Umno to rely on Najib, blaming BN’s loss in the last general election on the latter.
Reacting to the attacks today, Najib said that BN partners had also been unhappy when Nazri was made the coalition’s secretary-general.
“We are all aware that previously, he was asked by MCA and MIC to let go of the position as BN secretary-general,” said Najib. – July 14, 2019.
