NAJIB Razak had originally wanted to become the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, a post conventionally held by the Umno president, said Mohamed Nazri Aziz.

However, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi decided to make his predecessor the chairman of the former ruling coalition’s advisory board instead, he said.

“I know that Najib wanted to be the BN chairman, and not to be the chairman of BN’s advisory board.

“Maybe he has seen a bright future for BN following our cooperation with PAS, so he wanted to take advantage of that situation.

“Maybe he wants to become the prime minister again. He should give way to young and new leaders,” he said in his speech at the Padang Rengas Umno division meeting in Kuala Kangsar today.

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who was also present, confirmed Nazri’s claims.

“Correct,” he said briefly during a press conference later.

Both Nazri and Khairy have rejected Zahid’s decision to appoint Najib to the BN post, calling it regressive.

Zahid yesterday responded to their earlier criticisms, saying that Najib was given the job due to the many advantages the former Umno president still has.

“We need to bring in and make use of all the leaders we have with us. We must admit that Najib has his advantages, and so it is with Tengku Razaleigh (Hamzah).

“Why do we need to shove them aside, unless they have become mad (gila talak),” he had said. – July 14, 2019.

  • Hard to see any future for UMNO under these two. PAS better re-evaluate the partnership or they too will be dragged into the mud.
