UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has hit out at an unnamed party leader for continuously “barking here and there” at a time when the party is trying to rebuild itself.

While he had not named the leader in his speech to officiate the Tangga Batu Umno divisional meeting yesterday evening, it was quite clear that he was referring to former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Zahid was particularly peeved with Khairy’s criticism over Najib Razak’s recent appointment as the chairman of the Barisan Nasional advisory council.

He said Najib was given the job due to the many advantages the former Umno president has.

“We need to bring in and make use of all the leaders we have with us. We must admit that Najib has his advantages, and so it is with Tengku Razaleigh (Hamzah).

“Why do we need to shove them aside, unless they have become mad (gila talak).

“That person had contested the Umno presidency before but does not want to accept the fact (that he was defeated) and now he’s barking here and there.

“I would not say whether this person is dead or alive,” he said.

Zahid said that leader can mount a fresh challenge for the presidency in the next party elections.

However, Zahid said if the leader is defeated again, then he has to accept reality and those who make the decisions.

Zahin said he would do likewise, if the leader wins.

In the last party polls, Khairy had challenged Zahid for the president’s post. His defeat left him without any position on the party.

In recent weeks, Khairy had slammed Umno for relying on Najib to make a come back, calling such acts as being regressive. He was also open to Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s suggestions for Malays to join Bersatu while the call was rejected by Umno leaders.

While Zahid had not named Khairy in his speech, he similarly called out former BN secretary-general Nazri Aziz over his criticism over Najib’s appointment.

But he said he does not see Nazri’s criticisms as an attack on him.

“It’s alright. Nazri is like a brother to me. I do not think he meant what he said but still what’s wrong in being inclusive with former leaders with us?” he said.

Khairy and Nazri are among Umno leaders who were vocal in their criticism of Najib’s appointment.

Nazri had described the appointment as a regressive step while Khairy said he was suddenly no longer happy where he is. – July 14, 2019.

  • Instead of winning the hearts and mind of his people he is picking a fight with them. Thats not true leadership.

    • Is Zahid a true leader? He is more of a big-time crook, and associated with gangsters. Good for UMNO that they have him, Najib and Ku Nan as leaders.
