BARISAN Nasional does not stand a chance of winning the next general election if it decides to let Najib Razak lead the coalition, said Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said appointing Najib chairman of BN’s advisory council was a “mad decision”.

“What is mad is that we are doing the same thing but expecting different results.

“We bring back Najib and expect a different outcome,” he said at the Padang Rengas Umno division meeting today. He was the guest of honour at the event.

The former Umno Youth chief also urged Najib not to use the party to “shield” himself against court proceedings.

He said party members are innocent of the crimes that Najib is accused of.

“Ladies and gentlemen. It is not that I don’t respect Najib… He adopted me as a cabinet minister… I do owe him gratitude.

“But my appeal is: Do not use the party as a personal shield because those in the lower rung are innocent. Millions of Umno members are innocent.

“I was a minister. I know of the mistakes and I apologise to the people of Malaysia,” said Khairy.

The former youth and sports minister also urged Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take charge of leading the party and not be Najib’s choirboy.

He also urged the party not to treat those who speak out like outcasts.

“To the party leaders, do not treat us like wild beasts cast out by the pack,” Khairy said.

“Maybe we do not have any positions, but we are not traitors who will leave the party and cross over to Pakatan Harapan.

“What we are saying is only for the benefit of the party because we do not want the old culture to repeat itself,” he added.

Khairy and Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz are among the few leading figures in Umno critical of Najib’s appointment as BN’s chief adviser.

Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said the party would listen to dissenters, but Zahid still had the last word. – July 14, 2019.

  • Najib is being tried in the court and Zahid has been charged (almost 80 charges) for corruption. How is UMNO going to make the right decision to protect it's members interests if the head of the fish is rotten?

  • KJ and Mat Hasan should form a new party. I am sure many existing UMNO members will follow them.
