THE death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim is “directly linked” to Malay rights, a lawyer for the young firefighter’s family told protesters at a rally in Kuala Lumpur today.
Zubir Embong from PAS’ legal and human rights bureau said this was because there were attempts to “cover up” facts in an ongoing inquest into how Adib sustained injuries while on duty at riots outside a Hindu temple last November.
“His death is one of many issues where Malay rights are being subdued. A Malay fireman was killed doing his job and the government is not defending him,” Zubir said when giving a speech to protesters outside the Sogo shopping complex today.
“As a lawyer, I cannot talk about matters in the case. But I want to say that there are efforts to cover up what happened to Adib,” Zubir said.
He said the ongoing inquest had heard different versions as to how Adib sustained injuries that ultimately led to his death in December.
“One is that he was hit by a vehicle. The other is that he was beaten. Now there’s an appeal on whether one pathologist will be called again to dismiss the other pathologist’s testimonies.
“We as the rakyat must ask that justice is done for Adib,” Zubir said.
Adib’s death is one of several issues that Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah), a coalition of Muslim civil society groups, listed as reasons for the protest today.
There is an ongoing inquest in the coroner’s court to determine how the fireman died after sustaining injuries during the riot.
Ummah member Masrizi Sat, an ustaz, also told the crowd that the inquest was “false” and that the government was “lying that Adib was not beaten”.
“If they can cover this up, imagine what (else) they (the government) can do.”
The other issues are Putrajaya’s attempts to ratify international treaties that some Malay and pro-royalty groups say will threaten the position of the Malay rulers, as well as the government’s recognition of the Chinese secondary school qualification, the United Examination Certificate.
The rally is taking place on the streets between Masjid Jamek and the Sogo shopping complex in the capital, where protesters are dressed in white t-shirts declaring loyalty to the monarchy.
While the organiser is a coalition of Muslim civil society groups, PAS and Umno are also backing the rally and showing support for claims that Malays and Muslims are more oppressed under the Pakatan Harapan government.
A group of some 100 supporters who said they were from Hulu Langat Umno carried placards against Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, calling for his sacking, while also declaring support from Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who has been vocal in opposing Putrajaya on several issues.
Other protesters carried placards in support of Tunku Ismail, which said “TMJ loved by the people, Mahathir loved by Saddiq”, in reference to Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman. – May 4, 2019.

Putting a racial spin on a issue that is still being investigated.
Let the inquest be completed and the decision known.
