PAS will not enter into an alliance with Umno as it is a sinking ship, said Abdul Hadi Awang.
The PAS president said the Islamist party will only suffer damage if it were to link up with Umno.
The Marang MP was at a programme in Dublin, Ireland, yesterday.
Although Umno was a sinking ship, it was not going to its grave any time soon, Hadi said.
PAS is willing to accept any of its “members jumping from the old ship”.
He added that PAS will not work with Umno as both Malay parties had different ideologies.
PAS wanted Islam to rule, not to be ruled, he said.
The ties between both parties came under scrutiny after Umno, the lynchpin party in Barisan Nasional, lost the May 9 general election.
BN now only rules in Pahang and Perlis.
However, PAS did better in GE14 when it retained Kelantan and captured Terengganu, which it lost in the 2004 elections.
Subsequently, both parties cooperated in three by-elections – Sg Kandis, Seri Setia and Port Dickson.
PAS and Umno combined forces to oppose Putrajaya’s plan to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), which culminated in a rally in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, on December 8.
Despite these developments, leaders from both sides said they could not envisage the parties entering into an alliance or merging.
In the Harakah report, Hadi said PAS was willing to work with anyone who placed a premium on Muslims being given a prominent role in the country’s leadership.
Malaysia is a Muslim-majority state and it is wrong if its leadership is dominated by non-Muslims, he said. – December 25, 2018.
