RAHIM Noor should just shut up and stop interfering in political affairs, said PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad, slamming the former inspector-general of police who said the Islamist party leader had a role in the Memali incident more than 30 years ago.
“Who is Rahim Noor to make accusations that the Memali incident was caused by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang,” Idris said in a statement this evening.
Idris then took Rahim to task for the black-eye incident when he hit former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was in police custody, in September 1998.
The Malaysian Insight quoted Rahim earlier today as saying PAS had no reason to welcome a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Memali incident, as it would reveal the role that Hadi played in the tragedy.
Four police officers and 14 civilians died when law enforcers and a militant Muslim group led by Ibrahim Libya clashed more than 30 years ago in Memali.
Rahim said Hadi’s speech in 1985 had influenced Ibrahim and his followers and caused them to think they were fighting a righteous cause.
Idris also said Ibrahim Libya, who was killed in Memali, was an educated person and not religiously ignorant.
Rahim served two months in prison and was fined RM2,000 for assaulting Anwar after the Court of Appeal maintained the conviction and punishment in April 2001.
“Rahim was supposed to maintain the peace and security in the precinct and protect those detained from harm. But what had happened was the opposite.
“So, he should just stop making baseless accusations against Hadi.” – August 22, 2017.
