WATER sports have great potential in Malaysia, said Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim, calling on all parties to provide incentives and assistance to further their development.
He said more water-sport activities should be organised, and that the country should emulate Australia, which has created a name for itself in water sports.
“The beaches in Port Dickson must be preserved and utilised for recreational purposes, and we must intensify our efforts to boost water sports.
“I believe water sports should be given due attention because not only are they good for health, but they also help build discipline,” he said at the launch of the Negri Sembilan Canoe Association (Nesca) in Port Dickson today.
Present was Nesca president Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin.
Megat said the association plans to develop the country’s top canoe sports excellence centre, equipped with the best facilities and trainers, in Port Dickson.
“We will work with the state Irrigation and Drainage Department to identify locations, especially rivers, that can be used for recreational purposes and top-class canoe competitions.
“We will also work with the state sports council to produce top-class canoe athletes. We are targeting three gold medals at the 2020 Malaysia Games.” – Bernama, November 10, 2018.
