NAJIB Razak was bashed on social media after he denied knowledge of the biggest kleptocracy scandal in the world that happened during his administration, and with his own brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Not many on social media bought his “don’t know” answers in his recent interview with Reuters, with many slamming the former prime minister for assuming the people were stupid.
Lawyer Art Harun tweeted with the profile name “Encik iDon’t Know”, and the hashtag #iDontKnow.
“What do I know? I was only the PM, the MoF, and the guy whose approval must be obtained for all financial matters in 1MDB. #iDontKnow,” he tweeted from his handle, @art_harun.
“We have a prime minister cum minister of finance cum ultimate financial adviser to a state ‘sovereign fund’ who did not know that BILLIONS were being embezzled and millions ended up in his account, but who knew that his chocolates in the fridge went missing. Classic!
“Najib Razak is every cross-examiner’s wet dream. Oh man…” the lawyer said in subsequent tweets.
He was referring to Najib’s earlier complaint that the police who had raided his house in Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, several weeks ago, had helped themselves to chocolates from the refrigerator.
Billions were reportedly siphoned out of 1MDB in recent years and used to buy luxury assets like paintings, real estate, jewellery, and a yacht overseas.
After BN was voted out of government, the new Pakatan Harapan government, under Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, ordered investigations into the 1MDB scandal.
Najib’s home in Langgak Duta and other properties linked to him were raided, leading authorities to confiscate cash, jewellery, and branded handbags.
Najib, who is being investigated for money-laundering, told Reuters in an interview in Langkawi that the handbags and jewellery were wedding presents to his daughter.
His son-in-law, Kessikbayev, a nephew of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, also gifted many of the handbags to his wife, Rosmah Mansor, he said.
Faris Imadi (@farisimadifik) said Najib had “probably gone mental”.
“You were finance minister. You admitted you didn’t know money went into your own bank account. How did you qualify to become finance minister?” he tweeted.
Meriam Buluh (@kar33n_almania) tweeted: “The people’s decision to bring down Najib in GE14 was spot on. He didn’t know about everything. It is right for you (Najib) to retire.”
“Najib thinks all Malaysians are stupid like Umno members. He thinks the people believe there was a crazy Arab who donated RM2.6 billion,” TG.Haslinda (@tg_haslinda) tweeted.
“Najib thinks the people are stupid and will believe someone would give five Birkin bags a month as presents.”
Blanco’s Cuauhtemiña (@nazim_masnawi) said perhaps Najib was born into the world solely to test the people’s patience.
“What else are statements like these good for?” he tweeted.
Azfar Ridhwan (@AzfarRidhwan) said Najib’s words could not be trusted, pointing out that he had previously said he did not know Jho Low (Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, who is also wanted in the 1MDB investigation), but a photo of them together had surfaced later.
On Facebook, Izad Mahat said if it was true that Najib did not know what had happened, he would have ordered for investigations to be conducted, including on Jho Low.
“If it is true he did not know that the RM2.6 billion was from 1MDB or its subsidiary, he would have surely told (then attorney-general Mohamed) Apandi Ali to give mutual legal assistance to MACC to complete investigations.
“He also would have had Jho Low investigated, along with the allegations in the US Department of Justice civil suit.
“He would not have closed investigations. Lying after stealing. How can people not feel angry and disgusted?” Izad wrote.
Najib’s sanity was also questioned by some social media users.
“On 1MDB, everyone else is wrong, except Najib. That’s according to him.
“He has either lost his mind, or he thinks everyone is stupid and will believe him,” Yaakob Osman said on Facebook. – June 21, 2018.
