Rina tests positive for Covid-19

RINA Mohd Harun is the latest cabinet minister to have tested positive for Covid-19 after Mustapa Mohamed confirmed he had been infected by the coronavirus last Saturday.

In a statement, the Woman, Family and Community Development Minister’s office said she was admitted to the Sg Buloh hospital this morning.

It said she had the Covid-19 swab test done at the Putrajaya Klinik Kesihatan yesterday morning and received a positive result today.

“Rina was admitted this morning to the Sg Buloh hospital at 11am for observation and will follow all standard operating procedure set by the Health Ministry,” it said in the statement.

Two ministers identified as close contacts of Mustapa after attending a cabinet meeting in last Wednesday have now gone into self-isolation.

They are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof and Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah. Both had sat next to Mustapa during the meeting in Putrajaya.

Mustapa confirmed yesterday that he tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday.

He is undergoing treatment at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, Kota Baru, Kelantan.

Meanwhile, Water and Environment Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the cabinet secretariat had directed all ministers to take the swab test following Mustapa’s case.

“I have taken the test this morning, following the directive from the secretariat,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Malaysia is now grappling with a worsening Covid-19 pandemic and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is set to announce new measures later today to bring it under control.

Yesterday, the country recorded 2,433 new Covid-19 cases with the bulk of infections coming from Selangor, Sabah and Johor.

Director-General of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that Selangor reported the highest number of new daily cases at 730.

“Of these, 510 cases were from clusters and Covid-19 close contact screening conducted in the field.

“This was followed by Sabah with 403 cases and Johor with 321 cases,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Yesterday the country recorded nine new deaths, bringing the death toll to 551.

Noor Hisham said as of yesterday 1,277 cases had recovered, bringing the cumulative number of recovered patients to 108,109 cases.

He said the total number of positive cases recorded in Malaysia was 135,992 with 27,332 active cases. – January 11, 2021.
