POLICE have summoned lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri for questioning over a protest at Dataran Merdeka last night against the appointment of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a statement on Twitter, she said she was being investigated under the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act.
“I have been summoned by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit, Bukit Aman, and will be there on Tuesday, March 3, at 11am.”
Fadiah, who had given a speech at the protest last night, said in her statement that many other Malaysian were angry that the power tussle between politicians had caused the collapse of the government they voted for in 2018.
“The police, however, have singled me out,” she said.
She also slammed the use of the Sedition Act, saying: “Standing up for ourselves and for each other, is not, and cannot be harmful or ‘seditious’.”
Rights group Suaram also condemned the police investigation into Fadiah, urging the police to instead provide a safe platform for people to make their voices heard.
“The Royal Malaysian Police ought to be protecting the rights provided for under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and ensure that the public can express their views freely without intimidation.
“The government of Malaysia does not belong to any ruling elite, nor does it belong to politicians. The government of Malaysia belongs to the people, and the people must be allowed to voice their support, concerns and criticisms at such times of crisis.
“The people are the root of any legitimate government and any attempt to stifle the voice of the people is a betrayal to our democracy,” said Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy. – March 1, 2020.
