MOHAMAD Sabu has retained the Amanah president’s post, said sources from the newly elected 27-member central committee, while Salahuddin Ayub is deputy.

The two have helmed the four-year-old party since its founding when they along with several other prominent figures left Islamist party PAS.

In the party’s first-ever election yesterday, both were among five ministers voted into the central committee.

Mohamad is defence minister and Salahuddin holds the agriculture and agro-based industry portfolio.

Mohamad received 683 out of 822 votes yesterday and came in seventh place while Salahuddin polled 765.

After elections for the central committee were completed late yesterday, they along with 14 state chiefs and the heads of Amanah’s wanita and youth wings decided among themselves who will be president, deputy president and five vice-presidents.

As at 9am, it could not be determined who were the five vice-presidents.

The outgoing vice-presidents are Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus, Hasan Bahrom, Husam Musa and Mahfuz Omar. – December 7, 2019.
