POLICE reports have been lodged against Tg Piai by-election candidate Wee Jeck Seng for his involvement in a troubled Barisan Nasional (BN) era project for vehicles travelling between Johor and Singapore.

The reports were lodged with the Pontian district police by political activists of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruling coalition.

A Johor PH official said another report will be lodged tomorrow with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Johor Baru.

Wee is contesting under the BN banner and his biggest rival in the polls is PH’s Karmaine Sardini.

The reports urge the authorities to investigate possible wrongdoing in the RM149.45 million project, which was to install and run a vehicle entry permit (VEP) system between Malaysia and Singapore.

Wee had allegedly been involved in the VEP when he was a BN MP for Tg Piai prior to the 14th general election.

A 2017 auditor-general report found problems with the system such as drastic hikes in operational expenditure and the fact that the project’s contractor TCSens Sdn Bhd had only RM35 in its accounts when it took on the project.

Wee is allegedly connected to TCSens, which was awarded the project through direct negotiations instead of an open tender.

The parliamentary public accounts committee (PAC) is also looking into the project.

PH leaders and activists are expected to use the issue against Wee in their campaign for Tg Piai. – November 5, 2019.
