ONLY a small number of Malay voters are unhappy with the Pakatan Harapan government, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.
The prime minister dismissed as inaccurate a survey by Ilham Centre and the Penang Institute that found 60% of Malay voters polled were displeased with the ruling coalition’s performance.
“This study was done by the opposition as part of their campaign. It is not 60%. There might be a small percentage (of Malay voters unhappy with PH), but it’s not 60%,” said Dr Mahathir, who is also PH chairman, after a meeting of the pact’s presidential council in Putrajaya.
The survey, which involved 2,614 Malay respondents in the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak, was carried out between October and December last year, five months after PH won federal power.
Among its findings was that Malays felt the government did not uphold the Malay agenda, the community’s rights and the position of Islam.
Malays also felt that the Chinese-led multiracial DAP was calling the shots in Putrajaya, the survey found.
Dr Mahathir said the opposition is using this narrative to make it seem as if PH parties are controlled by DAP.
“They are using this fiction, that PH is run by DAP, that I am only a puppet.”
Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said PH is aware of the survey, and that ministers must swiftly act to address Malay voters’ concerns.
She acknowledged that it is a challenge for the government to cater to everyone’s demands. – February 1, 2019.
