SABAH police have yet to establish the identity of the man who took a two-year old girl hostage in Telipok Ria flats, near Kota Kinabalu, yesterday.

State police commissioner Omar Mammah said the suspect is believed to be in his 30s and only spoke in Suluk during the five-hour hostage situation.

“The man only kept on repeating the name Rashid… We have interrogated the victim’s family and their neighbours, but nobody knew who this Rashid was,” he said during a press conference today.

He said police are now going through the suspect’s mobile phone to figure out his identity and blood samples were also taken to see if he was high on drugs.

“His fingerprints have been taken and are in the process of being checked with our database as well as the National Registration Department (NRD) to try get a match,” Omar said.

Omar, meanwhile, noted the young victim is now recuperating well at the Likas Hospital.

More patrols and operations conducted at the residential area to prevent similar incidents from reoccuring. – January 14, 2019.
