Keeping the gasing pangkah tradition spinning

Hasmizar Hassan

KG Tepoh in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, is one of the few villages that still makes, plays and even organises a gasing pangkah competition every year.

Gasing pangkah is a type of traditional Malay spinning top game which involves knocking your opponent’s gasing out of the circle or toppling it.

This month, Kg Tepoh held a league competition with other kampungs around Kuala Nerus, which ends in April. It is usually played by the older generation and is increasingly being forgotten by the youth.

The good news is, the competition is being supported by the tourism authority in Terengganu and the prize has gone up to RM5,000. To preserve culture and tradition in the onslaught of modernity is tough and challenging. – March 27, 2018.
