TENSION is still bristling in the forests around Kampung Tasik Cunex in Gerik, Perak, where Orang Asli and loggers were engaged in another face-off one week after the state government dismantled the Temiar tribesmen’s blockade. – May 25, 2019.

  • To continue to regard logging as a legitimate economic activity in the 21st century, knowing full well the ecosystemic destruction that inevitably results, is arguably mankind's most glaring folly. I would declare an immediate moratorium on all logging to safeguard water and air quality. Just because something is lucrative for a handful does not legitimize it. A few may become millionaires but the subsequent losses to so many from floods, landslides and damage to the topsoil make logging an utterly cost-inefficient business. Instead of depleting our tropical hardwood resources, a farsighted management would be encouraging the production of alternative building materials, perhaps from a blend of recycled PVC and organic fibers (like copra and hemp).
