BARISAN Nasional should not contest the Port Dickson by-election as a matter of principle that elections should not be manufactured, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said, ahead of a decision by the political bureau later today.
“We should not compromise with such actions to deliberately vacate a set just to fulfil the political ambitions of a certain individual,” Mohamad said in a statement.
He listed a few reasons for his position, including that Umno should remain focused on rejuvenating the party after losing in the 14th general election.
Umno should also do an in-depth analysis of support in has in all parliamentary and state seats in Malaysia, he added.
“There is no agenda more important now than to put in effort in re-instil the trust of the members and people towards Umno.
“Involving ourselves in the by-election at this time will not help reform the party. In fact, it will drag the party into a ‘politiking’ space which is diverted from the efforts to bring improvements to Umno,” said the former Negri Sembilan menteri besar.

The in-depth analysis he suggested will allow the party to plan a long-term as well as short-term strategy for itself.
Mohamad added that such research will aid Umno in effectively managing its role in the new political landscape in the country.
The political bureau of the party is still meeting at PWTC now.
The Port Dickson by-election is called following the resignation of its incumbent MP, Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, to make way for PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim to return to Parliament.
Independent Stevie Chan Keng Leong has confirmed his candidacy, while Parti Rakyat Malaysia has indicated it will contest the seat. – September 24, 2018.
